Elijah’s ministry can be compared to a roller coaster ride. In 1 Kings 18, he experienced a spiritual high when God answered his prayer and fire consumed his sacrifice. The prophets of Baal prayed for hours and got no answer. Elijah had prayed for no rain and there was none for 3-1/2 years. This time he prayed for rain to come. He sent his servant six times to check the weather and the skies were clear. The seventh time a cloud the size of a man’s hand appeared and Elijah knew the answer was on the way. He ran ahead of King Ahab’s chariot to the city of Jezreel as the rain storm came.
In 1 Kings 19, the scene changes, and Elijah is intimidated by Queen Jezebel who vows to kill him because he had 450 prophets of Baal killed.
There are three truths found in this story:
Elijah ended his flight journey at Mt. Horeb, the mountain of God. It is also known as Mt. Sinai where the Ten Commandments were given to Moses. Elijah appears at one other mountain in Scripture and that is the Mount of Transfiguration. That event reveals that Jesus is the ultimate goal of Scripture.
