How to Know What God Wants You to Do
James 1:5-6 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
Life is full of decisions…some are major, some are not. Decisions such as coming to church, what job to take, what college to attend, who to marry, handling finances, purchasing a new house, etc. How do we know what God’s will is?
#1: Get out of your head. Approach God in faith and trust Him to show you His will for your life. Our text tells us that when we doubt, we are like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
#2: Give God the steering wheel of your life. Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Often we make quick decisions but instead, we should wait on God and seek His will, not pray for Him to bless what we want.
#3: To truly know what God’s will is, talk to God. Luke 6:12-13 “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated apostles…” Before Jesus chose His disciples, He prayed to His Heavenly Father.
Look at the cross. Jesus had no one to lean on because a holy God could not look at Jesus as He carried the sins of the world. We are blessed because we have Jesus to lean on and guide us in our decision-making.
Jesus made the decision to go to the cross because that was God’s will. As we seek God, He will give us the power to make the right decisions according to His will. God is beside us, God is behind us, God is in front of us! We are never alone but He is always there to guide us.
