God @ The Movies: Encouragement
‘Lifemark’
Thessalonians 2:1-13-3:13
Movie Description: David’s comfortable world is turned upside down when his birthmother unexpectedly reaches out to him, longing to meet the 18-year-old son she’s only held once. With the encouragement of his adoptive parents, David embarks on a journey of discovery that leads to a staggering truth from his past.
In our text, Paul encourages the church at Thessalonica by giving thanks to God for them and the joy he has because they stand firm in the Lord. Paul was more than willing to send Timothy to check on them even though it mean he was left alone.
Often we need to come to the rescue of someone who has started drifting away from the church or maybe from the Christian life.
Three ways to carry out a rescue:
Number 1: Watch the shore and pray. Hebrews 3:13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
Number 2: Pursue a personal connection. James 5:19-20 “My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” Bring up past spiritual wins. Lovingly confront. Don’t condone sin. Don’t give up, find ways to spend time with them.
Number 3: The goal is rescue. 1 Thessalonians 3:8 “For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.”
Challenge: Are you drifting? Or who do you know who is drifting? What fears are keeping you from starting a rescue mission? What’s your motivation and when can you start an “operation rescue”?
