‘Ordinary Angels’
1 Thessalonians 1:1-20
The Christian movie Ordinary Angels calls to mind the power of encouragement. The Holy Spirit is like a fresh breath from an air supply that brings encouragement but often the line is stepped on by the world or negative people. It is fearful when you are unable to get a good breath. That is why we need the Holy Spirit to clean our air supply. Often He uses other believers to encourage and uplift us.
We are called to encourage one another. Here are four ways to accomplish that goal:
Number 1: Bestow a blessing. In verse 1 of our text, Paul encourages the Thessalonians with words of grace and peace. They lived in a pagan society and were surrounded by idol worship. The church there needed encouraging words for strength to live godly and continue in the faith.
Number 2: Express your thankfulness for who they are and what they’ve done. In verses 2-3, Paul did just that, an example for us. Be specific—Be objective—Use biblical truth.
Number 3: Express confidence in their faith. This is what Paul did in verses 4-6. Encouraging words build up while negative words tear down.
Number 4: Tell them about the impact they are having. In verses 7-10, this is what Paul told the Thessalonians. He commented on their faith and service to the living and true God.
Who can you encourage this week?
