Bible Text: Hebrews 5:11-14 | Speaker: Joel Bauler | Grow up!
Hebrews 5:11-14
NJKV 11 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Memorial Day—what’s it all about? Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
About three years ago, Pastor Joel discovered that the 15 students he was teaching didn’t know what D Day was so he gave them a history lesson. (the day June 6, 1944, in World War II on which Allied forces invaded northern France by means of beach landings in Normandy.) The students were fascinated by this history lesson yet how sad that they had never been taught about it.
Our nation as well as the Western Church is in decline. There is apathy and a desire for comfort and entertainment. Yet in many parts of the world, believers are suffering and dying for their faith. Suffering has always led to spiritual growth in the church.
The Word of God is like a mirror that reveals what we are and what we need to do to grow in our Christian walk. The text speaks about baby Christians who need milk and not the solid meat of the Word. How would you feel if you were invited to a Memorial Day picnic and the menu was milk only: chocolate, soy, almond etc. You would probably question where is the meat??
What are the signs of spiritual immaturity?
Dull of hearing. (Another version: don’t try to understand) The Word of God is living and should be exciting to believers.
Inability to teach God’s Word to others. Every believer has a story of their conversion and should be excited to share it with others as well as what they are learning in their Bible study.
Unhealthy Diet and Lack of Exercise. To be healthy physically, there is a need for both a healthy diet and exercise. Likewise, to be spiritual, a healthy diet and exercise are needed. It’s simple: READ the Word, DO the Word.
God’s Word is telling us to quit acting like a baby and grow up.
