Faith like Father Abraham
Hebrews 11:1 NIV: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” In other words, faith could be described as confidence that God is who He says He is and will do what He promises He will do.
Abraham is the father of our faith. It is faith that receives the promise of God and not by force or formula. It is a way of thinking. Faith tells us it will be so while hope tells us it may be so. How can we move from hope to faith?
1. Meditate on God’s Word. Romans 10:17: So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
2. Be encouraged by who God is. 2 Peter 3:9: The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
3. Surround yourself with people of like faith. Proverbs 27:17: As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
Father Abraham is an example for us today. He positioned himself to hear from God, took action to obey, and allowed God to stretch his faith through the difficulties he faced. Abraham passed his faith on to the next generation and we should also convey our trust in God and His promises to our children.
